Since 1999, Gomoll Research + Design has collaborated extensively with Bio-Rad on user research, conceptual design, visual design, and usability testing. We have worked on products in Clinical Diagnostics, Clinical Systems, Life Science Research, and Clinical Immunology.

Touch Screen UI for Hemoglobin Testing

For the D-100 project, GRD was hired to design Bio-Rad’s next generation hemoglobin testing system. The goal was to create an intuitive, elegant, and clean touch screen interface that anticipates the user’s next step while reducing worry and uncertainty.

STORY

Starting with an early conceptual design phase, we collaborated with Bio-Rad’s Clinical Diagnostics team to create a clear, consistent design framework focused on the user’s point-of-view. Next, a wireframe prototype was created, taking into consideration the size and viewing angle of the planned instrument screen. This prototype was tested with laboratory staff to validate the new concept and workflow in low, medium, and high volume environments.

SOLUTION

After refining the initial concept, we conducted a second round of testing with users – this time including visual explorations for review. We analyzed the feedback from the usability test sessions, then iterated on the conceptual and visual designs before realizing a final concept with high-resolution mockups and a detailed style guide.
